Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 crosses the $1 billion mark

Over the weekend Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 crossed the $1 billion mark after just 19 days of release, matching Avatar‘s record for the fastest movie to reach $1 billion. Potter’s final outing has taken $1.008 billion in total, $318.4m in the US (becoming the highest grossing Potter film) and $690m overseas (again, the highest Potter film).
As it stands Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is now eighth on the all-time worldwide chart, ahead of The Dark Knight but just behind Alice in Wonderland. Box Office Mojo predicts that with the movie opening in China next weekend, Potter will ultimately overtake The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($1.12 billion) to become the third highest grossing movie of all time (without inflation).

As you can see, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is on the verge of crossing the $1 billion mark. When it does that will make it the third movie from 2011 to join the all-time list. Obviously 3D ticket prices have helped immensely, and overseas audiences have made up 65-76% of the total grosses for each film
